A winter weekend built around firelight

A warm lunch, a little exploring and somewhere cosy to come home to.

If a weekend of cool air, good food and a cosy evening sounds appealing, winter is a lovely time to get to know the Granite Belt. Come prepared for the cold and give yourself a few comfortable places to stop along the way.

Find an evening you’ll enjoy

Would you like to settle into a cottage with a fire, cook something local or walk to dinner in town? It’s worth thinking about the evening when you choose your accommodation. If a fireplace is part of the plan, check that it’s available to use and whether firewood is supplied.

Make room for lunch

A lunch booking can be a good starting point for a winter day. You could add a tasting nearby, browse local produce or take a scenic drive. Allow time between bookings, and plan your return before you head out.

Bring a few warm layers

Mornings and evenings can be very cold. Pack a coat, layers and shoes with good grip, especially if you’re planning to walk. Check the forecast before travelling and take extra care around frost and wet granite.

Keep a wet-weather option

If the weather changes, you can still enjoy a café, a booked tasting or a longer lunch. For outdoor plans, check current road and park advice and be ready to choose another activity if conditions are unsuitable.

Check opening days and book the places you’re especially looking forward to. A little planning leaves you free to enjoy the welcome when you arrive.
