Autumn brings a lovely change to the Granite Belt. Mornings turn cooler, leaves add colour to the roadsides and a warm café becomes a welcome first stop. If you’re coming up for a weekend, here are a few ways to enjoy the season.

Ease into the morning

Coffee and a pastry in Stanthorpe make a good place to begin. Bring a warm layer, particularly if you’re heading out early, and allow a little time to wander before your first booking.

Leave time between stops

You might spend a morning around Applethorpe and Thulimbah, or head towards Ballandean for cellar doors and granite country. If you have a few places on your list, check the driving times as well as the tasting times. With a shorter visit, choosing one part of the region can give you more time to enjoy it.

Think about the evening, too

A cottage with a fire and a place within walking distance of dinner offer different kinds of evenings. Think about what you’d like to come back to, and book dinner ahead if there’s somewhere you’re keen to try.

A little planning helps

Accommodation, popular tastings and dining can need advance bookings, especially around holidays and events. Check your must-do stops before travelling, then leave a little room for the things you discover along the way.

A quick check before you go: confirm essential opening hours and bookings directly, and check current road or park advice if it affects your plans.
